North American motor users require a variety of electric motors and have been seeking a solution that includes motors for safe area operation and motors that meet requirements for hazardous area operation. Baldor Electric Company now offers these customers a full line of ABB low voltage IEC electric motors with these concerns in mind—as well as a resource for motor users to customize a motor order to meet their unique needs—and also provides high-voltage motor users a new option with higher power ranges.
MODIFICATION WITHOUT DELAYS
In the past, OEM customers looking to modify their equipment for delivery could be faced with costly delays. However, through Baldor’s Mod-Express® program, Baldor can now provide customized modifications for motor users coupled with timely delivery. With stock available in the United States, process performance (safe area) and hazardous area motors are ready for immediate delivery while both platforms are available to be modified to suit specific application requirements.
Process Performance motors are available from stock in aluminum or cast iron designs in frame sizes of 63 to 280 ranging from 0.16 to 125 horsepower. The motor platform meets the highest energy efficiency regulations needed for use in the United States with enhanced operating performance to provide reliability for industrial or OEM use.
ABB Flameproof and Non-Sparking motors meet the requirements where hazardous gases may be present. Both platforms are certified for ATEX and IECEx as standard in a cast iron frame with extra ingress protection (IP55) for increased safety. ABB Flameproof motors are available from stock in ratings of .75 to 60 horsepower. Flameproof motors are designed for Zone 1 locations where incidental explosive atmospheres may be present during normal duty. ABB Non-Sparking motors are also available from stock in ratings of 0.75 to 125 horsepower. These motors are designed for Zone 2 locations, where presence of explosive atmospheres is present only by accident.
Custom design IEC motors can be specified with specific requirements to fit almost any application worldwide; from a standard induction motor to a motor that is designed to exclusively be run on frequency converters.

NEW RIB-COOLED MOTORS
ABB’s expanded line of high voltage rib-cooled motor platform, type NXR, with higher power ranges and increased ingress protection is also now available through Baldor Electric Company. With higher power ranges and optional ingress protection up to IP66, these motors fit more industries and applications, providing more reliability and easier maintenance. The new NXR high voltage rib-cooled motor platform is based on the well-established and successful HXR range.
The NXR motor platform is now available in frame sizes 355 to 450 and in the power range of 100 to 1250 kW. The entire power range is enhanced with optional increased protection ratings up to IP66. Higher protection is especially important for applications where dust is present, such as in the mining and cement industries. IP66 means that the enclosure is completely dust tight and will withstand powerful water jets.
Size, shape and positioning of the cooling ribs have been optimized for best possible cooling performance. Pre-engineered fixing points are provided on the sides for accessories, making it easy to install accessories on the outside and ensures that airflow over the cooling surfaces is not affected.
Maintainability is enhanced by features like easy access to check the coil ends and bearings. These can be inspected with an endoscope without the need to remove the end shields. The wide range of standardized accessories includes two advanced condition monitoring systems, ABB MACHsense-P and ABB MACHsense-R, both of which can detect potential problems at a very early stage before they become serious. By enabling precisely targeted and timely maintenance, these systems help to reduce downtime and, therefore, lower the plant operator’s overall cost of ownership. ◆
